What do you think sets you apart from other models in the industry?
My Confidence in what I do is crazy. I’m 6’2 in my mind so that’s the energy I carry. I’m super comfortable in my skin and myself. I trust my skillset because I’m always studying and perfecting it so I can be better today, the next time and the time after that. I’ve taken on roles as Fashion Show Producer, Backstage Coordinator, Casting Director. Im in front of the camera, but I’m ALSO behind the camera. Yes your girl is a photographer as well and I’m a runway coach, so just as I’m breaking down and building up for others, I’m breaking down and rebuilding myself constantly. And I love helping other models. Even on sets or backstage when models ask for tips I jump into Fairy Model Mother mode and give boosts of confidence where I can. I want us to all look good and do and be the best.
Who is your fashion icon and why?
Naomi Campbell because I’m a runway girly and she is the runway goddess. I even did a personal project called “22 Days of Naomi” where, paying homage, I recreated with Andrew Millar (the same photographer who shot Elle en Noir), 22 of my favorite photos of her for each day in May leading up to her birthday May 22. Hmmm. Maybe I should publish it here in GMARO! (Hint hint. Lol)
How do you maintain your physical and mental health with such a demanding schedule?
So, for my physical maintenance, I eat mainly only fruits, vegetables , fish and nuts most times and I drink lots of coconut water. I go to gym anywhere between 5-7 times a week, even if it’s just to do cardio or sauna because a girly has to keep her figure popping, right? Lol. For my mental I sometimes just sit in stillness and quietness in my truck because It’s just a space to reset, dispel unnecessary energy and really analyze what’s going on around me. It also helps organize my creative thoughts so I can plan and produce art.
Can you walk us through your daily skincare routine?
OMG. I’m so simple. I wash my face with unscented body wash (because that’s what works for me), I follow up with Omorfoderma’s turmeric soap, and I use a face moisturizer by Belif. Oh! And I absolutely LOVE the Truth Serum by Ole Henrickson. But truthfully, my skincare starts with what I eat. So I stay away from greasy fried foods, soda, too much sugar…anything that’s known to trigger a breakout I try to stay away from. For my body, I use exfoliating gloves to remove any dead skin and when I’m finished I just use a simple Shea butter. It’s nothing too extravagant, but it works for me!
How do you decide which projects or brands to collaborate with?
This is super simple. If a brand is on brand with my aesthetic or I can grow with/from it then we may be able to collaborate. It has to make sense.
What’s your perspective on sustainable fashion?
Anything that helps the environment in a good way is a yay for me. Plus sustainable fashion is kinda innovative. It’s awesome to see what designers come up with all while preserving resources. It also gives creatives a lane to be fashionably expressive for them and other like minded individuals while still being true to what they believe in.
Can you share a memorable experience from backstage?
One memorable backstage moment; I arrived at a NYFW fashion show and I saw producer I knew. I said, “ I know Casting have happened a month ago, but if anything happens, come find me!” So he came and found me at the end of a fashion show and brought me back stage and said “You said you wanted to get back here, now do your thing!” While I was back there, I saw one of the producers looking like she was looking for someone. So I introduced myself and I said, “Well I’m a model and I was told to come backstage because you were missing a model.” And at that point that producer whisked me away to the next Designer that was about to showcase, the Designer approved me. They threw me in hair and make up and 20 minutes I was on the runway. That’s how I ended up on my first New York Fashion Week Runway show! And from there things took off for me.
What are the key qualities a successful model should have?
Models should have CONFIDENCE! That is key. Confidence and a certain level of vulnerability, humility and openness and sense of self. It helps with your presence when you walk into a room and your ability to perform when you get on set.
What’s one myth about modeling you’d like to debunk?
That models don’t eat! Lol. The models I know EAT! Lol. Some are super health conscious, and some like to eat crap. But all in all…we eat! lol.
How do you prepare for runway shows?
I do all of my grooming the night before and try to quiet my brain before I sleep. I try to always have my model bag prepared and I gotta have some coconut water and walnuts. When I arrive, I like to see the runway so I can envision myself on it and determine what energy I want to give it, . listen to my Super Model playlist and prepare to slay The Kaye Cox Way!
What’s your go-to outfit for a casual day?
My go to outfit for a casual day would be super simple. A plain crisp black or white tee, black or light blue jeans (the HAVE to be light blue) a blazer or motorcycle jacket, statement sunglasses and accessories and hair. I love simple boldness because it speaks Volumes without doing the most.
What has been your most rewarding professional achievement?
My most rewarding professional achievement is being respected model and being trusted as a runway coach. Being able to pull the highest confidence out of someone and watch them watch themselves evolve into a better, stronger version internally and externally fills my spirit the most. I’ve had models book shows and campaigns, young teens blossom into confident young women, and my professional women send me photos “Kaye, I strode into that gala and my confidence was on TEN!” Lol. When I get those responses, I have won.
What are your hobbies outside of modeling?
I absolutely love the beach because it has all the elements in one spot…earth, wind, fire, and water and it grounds and recharges me. I love the gun range because it helps with focus, I love people watching because it sparks inspiration. I love learning different languages because it helps me connect with other people. Lastly, I group chatting with my family every Tuesday and all we do is laugh. Laughter is one of the best medicines ever.
How do you deal with the competitive nature of the modeling industry?
I’m a competitor naturally, so I like the challenge a little bit. Lol. But I take it with a grain of salt because every agency, designer or producer has a different idea. A different taste. So I may not be the flavor of the month at the moment, but I still have to understand and know that I am the shit. I’m just not what that they want at the moment, when it comes down to certain competition. At times I may even have to convince them that I’m what they want. lol. When I book the job, I am that flavor that they are looking for and I just have to keep pushing to be the best. I have to keep pushing to be what they want.
What role do social media play in your professional life?
Social media has helped me reach networks and markets that I may not have as an independent model. Potential clients can find me just from the click of a hashtag. Do Social media definitely has a few benefits. I had even had Tyra Banks repost a picture of mine saying “The Kaye Cox Way has what it takes!” If Tyra Banks saw me, anyone can!
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career?
Well. I have a few. Lol. You have to believe in yourself whole heartedly because nobody’s gonna believe in you if you don’t. You gotta have skin tougher than an armadillo because you will hear tons of criticism, you may feel waves of insecurity in a room full of gorgeous Amazonian women. I’ve learned that you can hear a crap ton of “No’s” before you hear a lot of “Yes’s”. Just take the “No” as “Next Opportunity”. You have to invest in yourself whether it practicing yourself, or hiring someone. Idc how good you are…you always practice to be better.
